The Mayor's Fizzy Budget Ideas
by Anthony Perrella II

In his recent presentation of the new city budget, Mayor Nutter quoted Thomas Paine: "These are the times that try men's souls." But no soul in city hall is going to be tried. Just anyone who drinks soda or throws out trash. This amounts to only - oh, just about everyone.

Nutter names the new sweetened drink tax the "Healthy Philadelphia Initiative", which sounds like an oxymoron in the making. He wants to impose a 2-cent per ounce tax on these drinks so we will drink less of them.

Surely we'll all lose weight when we wash down our staple 1,200 calorie cheesesteaks with bottled water instead of soda. That, plus ideas like the previously proposed gym tax, and we'll stop being one of the country's fattest cities in no time.

If the idea of the soda tax is to deter people from having sweetened drinks, what is Nutter trying to discourage with the garbage tax (not an oxymoron)? Throwing out trash? What will drive people out of the city faster: stinky apartments or cheaper soda in Jersey?

Want to know what really needs reduction? The city budget. If only we could tax city hall.

Arlen Specter (D) vs. Pat Toomey (R) - A run for Pennsylvania Senate Seat
by Nicole Koenitzer

A five-term Senator since 1980, over the years it is unclear where Specter stands one way or the other. Democratic or Republican, he has flip flopped not only which party he ran for, but also on issues. But one thing is clear and that is where he stands TODAY. To quote Obama "...he was a great senator when he was a Republican; he's going to be an even better senator now that he's a Democrat." In full support of the Economic Recovery Act (in fact, he was the deciding vote) and also a supporter of Obama's health care program, he can be summed up with a general, whatever Obama is for, Arlen is for.

Toomey wants to get the government out of businesses so the businesses can take care of their own, opposing all the bail-outs, and never voting for tax increases. He consistently tries to lower our ever growing debt. Health care issues include encouraging individuals to get their own health care instead of going through their employer. He also sees benefits to allowing people to choose healthcare outside of their own state. He wants to focus on the lawsuits concerning doctors. He believes if these are curtailed, the overall cost of health care will be lowered. On immigration, he is against amnesty. He believes in rewarding legal immigrants with the same rights as any other citizen. However, illegal immigrants should not be rewarded for breaking the American law. He is pro-life, believing abortion should not be funded by the government. He believes marriage is defined by a sacrament between a man and a woman. He is a proponent of gun rights and has the same foreign policy ideas of that of Bush.

Well, it looks like we have a generic Democratic versus a generic Republican. What did they do - read the manual and follow the rule book exactly? Toomey would be much better if it was not for his pro-life, lack of gay rights and terrible foreign policy ideas; and Arlen would be fine if it was not for all his economic ideas. I just do not get it? Can't we combine the two to make the perfect Party? Oh, that would be the Libertarian Party...

"Let's Create a Job"

For decades politicians have campaigned on the promise they will "create jobs". In the current economic climate, the promises and rhetoric are reaching new levels. Can government really create jobs? Tony Perrella, Sr. explains how the three common government mechanisms for financing new jobs result in no net increases. He further offers a simple solution to significantly curb such chicanery by elected officials and the corruption so prevalent in government at all levels.

Tony Perrella, Sr. spent his working career as an engineering economist with a major petroleum company. His efforts involved economic evaluation of company and government programs, planning and evaluation of corporate research projects and development of alternative energies. In retirement he has become a self declared "political animal" firing off letters to editors and politicians.
